Downers Grove South Contest (10-6-07)
October 7, 2007Oh my God.. Yesterday was amazing. So we were walking to warm-ups for the contest, and then I notice - holy sh*t, my octave(sp?) key doesn't work! So when my section leader comes walking by, I tell him that it's not working. And in less than 5 seconds he points out what's wrong. I must have been in a rush when i was putting my instrument together, because it was put together wrong. After that happened, I felt like an idiot.
So we were at warm-ups, did our normal thing, and then walked back to go get ready to go onto the field. Well, we got there a whole band early! (I'm pretty sure on purpose, though.) So we had to just stand there the whole time carrying our instrument, uniform coat, gauntlets, and hat. And I was starting to get anxious to put on the coat, because I wanted to have enough time. Well, we put them on, and I was fine. Then we put our hats on, and got onto the track to get ready to go onto the field.
Well, going onto the field was a little different than normal. Normally my band goes onto the field from the endzone, and then we march onto the field. But at DGS, we had to march onto the field from the back of the field. It was different, and I had to go all the way to one of the endzone's for my opening set (where I start the show).
So the show starts, and it starts off really good. I'm remembering all of the visuals, and doing really good. But when I go to change directions to go to set 9 (the first big hit in the show) I almost wipe out. The ground was slippery, and when I changed directions, my foot slipped. But I caught myself, and ran to where I was supposed to be. I looked good, so I was fine. And I was really happy actually, because I remembered all of the visuals to that halt. (I always forget them.)
But then I started to do really bad in that movement. And every time I made a mistake, I would try harder, but then just make another one. I was getting pissed.
The second movement came and went, and I did AMAZING! I got the new visual right, and I played all of my music right. And I even heard a judge on the field talking about me. (I'm pretty sure it was good.)
And then the third movement came. I was not looking forward to this movement at all, because it is soo tireing. But I did it, and I was amazing. Except for this one part where the person in front of me just stopped moving. Then I yelled "MOVE!" and then went to the next set.
The show was over, and everyone said they did pretty good. I was soo excited to hear how we did. We were the last judged band on, so we just had to wait for the DGS band, who was in exhibition (not scored for the contest, just to see how they do) and then the awards.
The awards took forever. And it was soo boring, because most of the time, it wasn't for our class. We were in AAA, but they had to announce A and AA first.
After the A and AA awards were announced, it was time for our class. We really didn't think that we had a chance at too many awards. Especially drum major or color guard because Lincoln-Way Central was there. But I was still hopeful.
We didn't get any caption awards, and they were about to announce 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in our class. They announced 3rd place (I forgot who it was.) and they had a 77 I think for their score. Then it was time for second place. I was saying "If we don't get second, I'm going to cry." (because we got a 75 at our last contest, and I didn't want to go downhill.) "And second place with a score of 80.95, the Lemont High School Marching Band!" I was soo happy! That's the highest score this band has EVER gotten! Oh, my God! And then Lincoln-Way Central got first (What a surprise! They only got all of the captions!) They got an 85.
And our enemy band, Marion Catholic only got a 77 at a different Contest. Yes, I know it's a different contest, different judges and everything. But normally they get an 80 or higher no matter what.
Ahh, yesterday was amazing!
