A Day for Siblings: Thursday, May 8, 2008
Three informative, supportive, insightful sessions
for and by adult siblings:
Sharing the Sibling Experience: Adults with Developmental Disabilities and their Typically Developing Siblings Discuss their Past, Present and Future Together Siblings often share the longest relationships and most special bonds. During this session, siblings with and without developmental disabilities will share their thoughts and feelings about their past, present and future together.
Happily Ever After? How Having Siblings with Developmental Disabilities has Impacted Our Choices in Love, Marriage and Starting Families Decisions about finding a partner and starting a family can be daunting for anyone. A panel of adults who have siblings with developmental disabilities will discuss the unique challenges siblings may face in finding the right partner, making decisions about starting a family, and addressing the future care of their sibling with a disability.
Sibs Unite! Starting a State-Wide Support & Information Group for Adult Siblings in Illinois From the dream of one sibling and her local online support group to the incorporation of S.I.B.S., a non profit organization dedicated to providing information, support and resources to siblings of people with disabilities in order to enhance the quality of life for their entire families. This session will cover the successes and challenges of starting such a group. We hope you join us for a lively discussion!
At the end of the day, presenters and attendees who would like to continue to share stories, resources, support (and fun!) will gather for a casual dinner.
