Goodbye old friend

September 18, 2007

The world will not be the same without you.

My family's Golden Retriever, Jenni, had just turned 13 years old and over this past year she developed a lot of problems with her legs and slowly she became unable to walk. Over the past week she completely lost the use of her legs.

As the week went on Jenni started to refuse food water and eventually her medication. A year ago Jenni started suffering from seizures and without her medication it would only be a matter of time before she had another one and considering how sick she had become she most likely would not have been able to survive another one.

I knew this day was coming for awhile now but there still really is nothing you can do to prepare yourself. It is so hard to let her go when she has been such a huge part of my family’s lives and my friends as well. I was starting the 6th grade when Jenni joined our family as a little puppy. It won’t be the same without her.

I'm so sorry to hear that. I have a feeling my dog is getting to that point. She's almost 14 and 1/2. She's been having some problems lately. I like your quote from the Wizard of Oz.

I am so so sorry...... I know it doesnt help but she will be happier. I to had my dog Bear who passed just about a year ago after 13 years and 150lbs of a wonderful life.Bear had developed a brain tumor and had his first seizure on New Years Eve....He lasted 3 more months before his hips wouldnt support him and the seizures took over.It was the hardest day of my life but I knew he wouldnt suffer anymore.I held his head as he drifted off to heaven as I said my goodbyes and sobbed.I have his ashes and display them with a picture that way Bear is always with me where ever my journey takes me.I know this wont make the pain go away but just remember the good life and years that she spent with you and your family.I am always here if you ever need anyone to talk with or swap dog stories. Hugs, Jen I am including a beautiful peom that was given to me when Bear died so I am passing along to you:

      Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

I am so sorry for your loss. I have been through what you're going through twice before, and even though a person may know before hand that the inevitable will happen, it doesn't make it any easier to lose a member of your family, which is exactly what our pets are. I'm sending you lots of loyal hugs and trust me, the pain will ease in time, Christine
